Now that the ISO 7010:2011 is accepted as the European Standard EN ISO 7010:2012, what are the implications on the workfloor? This page gives some background on the standard, offers an overview of the icons and offers a way of downloading the icons in high-quality vector format...

ISO 7010:2011 = EN ISO 7010:2012

2011 brought us the new revision of the ISO 7010, titled "Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs". Is contains safety icons for accident prevention, fire safety, signaling health risks and evacuation.

The ISO 7010:2011 is developed in the spirit of the conventions named in the ISO 3864 standard : "Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs - Part 1: Design principles for safety signs and safety markings".

In Belgium - as in many other countries in Europe - this standard has been ignored for a long time because legislation focused on the European Directive 92/58 of June 24th, 1992 concerning the minimum requirements for the provision of safety and/or health signs at work. A Royal Decree of June 17th, 1997 in Belgium turns this into national legislation. This law and European Directive propose a set of icons - luckily the differences with the ISO 7010 are mostly cosmetic and are developed in the same mindset.

The changes between the two sets of icons are mostly subtle and rather aesthetical and the set was extended. Here's an overview of the differences in numbers and some remarkable icons not found in the new ISO-standard:

Type of icon EN 92/58/EEC ISO 7010:2011
Evacuation

16 (whereof 4 arrows, 2 icons voor normal exit and 5 emergency exit)

15 (no arrows, 2 icons for emergency exit)

The icon for regular exit is not part of this list.

Arrows are in design - there will be straight arrows and arrows under an angle of 45°

The icon for emergency exit differs substantially from the icon defined in the Royal Decree. Strictly one could argue that it infringes on the current legislation.

Fire fighting 8 (whereof 4 arrows) 6 (no arrows)
Obligations 11 26
Prohibitions 8 32
Cautions 18  28
Total 45 107

Standards and laws

Both Belgian and European Legislation (see above) refers to the icons attached to EN 92/58/EEC. To date (March 2013) there are amendments and drafts in Europe where the icons in the annex still refer to the old icon set. Possibly this was a negligence on European level that needs to be set straight. It's to be expected that legal experts will correct this flaw.

Spokesmen of the Belgian FPS ELSD and various fire departments indicate that the form of an icon will never be a breaking point. It's key that clear icons are in place where needed. And wether these icons follow the EN 92.58.EEC or the ISO 7010:2011 standard, is not they key issue.

Concretely this means that there's no need in rushing to replace existing icons with new ones. If you're planning to raise a new building though, it would seem wise to already anticipate using the icons of the ISO 7010:2011 standard.

Importance

Is an increasingly globalising economy, it's unavoidable for industry, commerce and science to also integrate this globalising trend in the way they work. For producing, selling and processing dangerous substances and mixtures, there has been the REACH-legislation using the CLP-principles for a couple of years now/ With the ISO 7010-standard, apart from the CLP-icons, there are now a whole lot of other icons that get harmonised.

Thanks to this European Standard, employees from all the EU countries will encounter the same signage for fire fighting, rescue and evacuation, warnings, prohibition- and mandatory agreements.

The replacement of old icons by the European equivalents, will obviously be a gradual effort that will take a few years. Once this has happened, we're again a step closer to a safer global economy.

Using the signs

The ISO 7010:2011 sets out a number of icons to be used for safety advice. In many cases, there are also conventions and legal directives on material specifications, or size of the icons depending on the reading distance and about supporting functionality (f.e. photoluminescense in badly lit environments, f.e. ISO 17398).

Obviously there still remain plenty of situations where digital versions of the signs have a certain value. They can be useful in safety instructions, manuals for new employees, instructional movies, websites, education, ...
